Ingredient Spotlight: Quinoa10.11.16
VERTS is all about finding healthy, delicious foods to share with the world.
One of the healthiest ingredients we use is quinoa, a tiny, ancient grain from the Andes in South America. More like a seed than a true grain, quinoa contains protein and many essential amino acids, making it a complete source of nutrients. A bonus? It’s a vegan, gluten-free way to get some protein in your diet!
With it being so delicate, quinoa is by and large harvested by hand as mechanical processes have proven too damaging to the crop. This harvesting dates back with the Andean people — way, way back — to around 3,ooo to 4,000 years ago, which, for those of you playing along at home, is a pretty long time. Couple that with the fact that the Incas christened it chisoya mama or “the mother of all grains” (along with it being certified as kosher in 2013), and it’s probably pretty easy to see why we’re planning to offer quinoa bowls at all VERTS locations soon.
If you’re looking for something light that still gives your body the nutrients it needs to grow and maintain itself, then you should come in and give it a whirl. If you’re already a fan of the pseudocereal you most likely don’t need any more convincing and you’re already planning on stopping in to see us this fall, right?
